Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route exhibition was a joint initiative between the Museum and FORM, an independent arts organisation based in Perth, Western Australia. This touring display developed by the National Museum of Australia (Museum) that reproduced a selection of artworks and exhibition text from the exhibition of the same name. The touring display showcases contemporary Aboriginal Art to international audiences and extends the reach and visibility of the Museum’s collection. The touring display comprises 14 graphic panels, including introduction, composite photo and acknowledgment panels.

The Canning Stock Route is a place where Indigenous and non-Indigenous histories intersect. First surveyed by Alfred Canning in 1906, it is the longest historic stock route in the world, running almost 2,000 kilometres across Western Australia, from Halls Creek to Wiluna. The development of this venture dramatically affected the lives of the Aboriginal people who lived in the region traversed by the stock route. For many years, however, the story of the stock route was told as a white man’s story. This ground breaking exhibition tells a story of contact, conflict and survival, of exodus and return, seen through Aboriginal eyes, and interpreted through their voices and art. The stories are about things that happened in the past and were not recorded, at that time but passed down orally by the older generation. The works in the collection recognise that this story goes back much further and is held firmly in the hearts and minds of the Aboriginal people who lived there.
