Biosecurity

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry develops and implements policies and programmes to ensure Australia’s agriculture, fisheries, food and forestry industries remain competitive, profitable and sustainable.  Australia’s biosecurity system protects human, animal and plant health by reducing the risk of unwanted pests and diseases arriving in Australia.

 

I'm travelling to Australia, what items must I declare upon arrival?

Australia values our unique environment that is essential to our high quality agriculture and tourism industries; as such, Australia has strict biosecurity regulations on items you bring into Australia.

When you arrive in Australia you will be required to fill in an incoming passenger card, which asks you to declare any specified food, plant material or animal products you might be bringing in with you. When you declare these items, a biosecurity officer will carry out an inspection. If the items do not pose a risk, they will be returned back to you. If your items are determined to be of biosecurity risk, you may be asked to dispose, export or treat your goods. The biosecurity officer will provide you with the relevant information, including associated costs and waiting time.

If you are unsure of the requirements to declare goods, tick ‘yes’ or ask a biosecurity officer on arrival.

Failing to make a declaration is an offence and serious consequences can result.

I want to mail goods to Australia, what do I need to know?

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry uses x-ray machines, detector dogs and inspectors to intercept mail articles sent to Australia containing biosecurity risk material. I'm moving to Australia, can I bring my pet with me?

Australia has very stringent biosecurity regulations; as such, there are strict procedures in place for people wishing to bring pets into Australia. An import permit is required to bring your pet into Australia from Taiwan. Please be advised that you will need to organise the import of your pet in advance and consider that your pet will be required undergo time in post entry quarantine.
