It is my very great pleasure to welcome all our guests here for our Australia Day reception. I would particularly like to welcome you here to our new ACIO office premises, to which we moved in April last year. To those of you for whom this is your first visit, a special welcome. We hope you will enjoy our hospitality and the Australian art works on display.

I hope you noticed a very special map on the 27th floor near the entrance, created by an Australian artist who visited Taiwan, Penny Cain. On the map, Taiwan and Japan are moving away from China. And of particular note, the part of the shirt representing Taiwan is the pocket where you put your money, symbolising that Taiwan is "where the money is". I'm not sure if you noticed this piece or not:

For those who did not notice the map, I suggest that you have a look on the way out.

26 January is Australia Day, Australia's national day. On this day, we celebrate not just Australia’s nationhood and its traditions of freedom and democracy, we also celebrate the rewards of a multicultural Australia. This is something Australians are proud of, and which has made Australia an attractive destination for Taiwanese migrants.

A multi-faceted relationship between Australia and Taiwan is vitally important to Australia and its people. The Taiwanese community in Australia plays an important role as a link between Australia and Taiwan.

The relationship between Taiwan and Australia is one of substance and mutual benefit, rather than purely one of form. Its substance is not solely economic. While Taiwan may be Australia’s 7th largest merchandise export market, other aspects, particularly the people-to-people links through education, science, tourism, culture and, of course, migration, are also important drivers of the relationship.

2007 saw major advances in the relationship, most significantly the agreement in November on terms for the largest single trade deal between Australia and Taiwan – for the purchase of Australian LNG valued at around USD40 billion over twenty years. As well, we welcomed to Australia the Chairman of the National Science Council, an important visit in building the foundations of what we hope will be a strong and productive relationship in medicine and the sciences. In fact, in 2007 there were nine visits by Ministers from Taiwan to Australia – assuredly a record.

May I particularly welcome here today members of our Australian community. You play an important part in building the bilateral relationship whether it be in your profession, in participating in organizations such as ANZCham or the Australian Taiwan Alumni Association or in the personal contribution you make within the local society. We at ACIO very much value that contribution.

In conclusion, I would again like to thank all our guests for helping us celebrate today, particularly our guest-of-honour, Vice Minister Elizabeth Chu. I hope you enjoy your time with us, particularly, the Australian wine, lamb and beef.

I would now ask Vice Minister Chu to join me and to ask you all to raise your glass for a toast to long and lasting friendship between Australia and Taiwan.
