Please submit your Australia-Taiwan Alumni Ideas Challenge competition entry in 12pt Times New Roman font and include the following information in your covering email:

  1. your full name and date of birth;
  2. the name of the Australia education institution and course from which you graduated;
  3. your preferred contact details, including mailing address, email address and telephone number (if any);
  4. the word count of your essay;
  5. confirmation that you have read and accept the Terms and Conditions of Entry; and
  6. in the case of the top placed entrants and runners-up, consent for DFAT to publish your name, the name of the Australian education institution form which you graduated and your photograph on DFAT channels, including but not limited to, DFAT’s website, DFAT social media accounts and the business envoy magazine.

A judging panel will be drawn from within the Australian Office, Taiwan government, Australian and Taiwan business community.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE ENTERING THE COMPETITION

  1. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (“DFAT”) ‘Australia-Taiwan Alumni Ideas Challenge competition’ (the “Competition”) is open to Taiwanese passport holders over the age of 18 who have graduated from an Australian education institution (university or TAFE/VET college) (‘Entrants’).
  2. Employees of DFAT, its contractors and /or their immediate family members may not enter the Competition. Immediate family member means spouse, de facto partner, child, grandchild, parent, grandparent and/or sibling (and their spouses). 
  3. DFAT reserves the right to verify the eligibility of each Entrant and to exclude and/or disqualify any Entrant who does not meet the eligibility requirements. By entering the Competition, the Entrant warrants that he or she is eligible.
  4. Entrants to the Competition shall be deemed to have accepted these Terms and Conditions. Any entry not complying with these Terms and Conditions is invalid.
  5. To enter the competition, Entrants must submit one entry in 12 point Times New Roman font that proposes an idea (pitch) to build further business and people-to-people links between Australia and Taiwan in one or more of the following areas:
    1. Business
    2. Innovation and science
    3. Energy
    4. Agriculture
    5. Education
    6. Tourism
    7. Arts, culture and sport
    8. Indigenous engagement
    9. Human rights and the environment
  6. The pitch should provide a clear view of how the concept will advance economic, innovation, cultural, and/or people-to-people links between Australia and Taiwan.  It should also include a practical plan to implement the idea, with suggested timeframes and milestones and potential partners and stakeholders in Australia and Taiwan.     
  7. Entries will be assessed against the following criteria:
    1. Impact: to what extent will the idea have broad benefit to Australia and Taiwan and reinforce positive perceptions, business and people-to-people links.
    2. Practicality: to what extent will the idea lead to a tangible outcome.  To what extent is it practical to implement, including identifying potential risks, partners and resource requirements;
    3. Sustainability: to what extent will the idea create sustainable ongoing cooperation; 
  8. The entry must be accompanied by the following details:
    1. your full name and date of birth;
    2. the name of the Australia education institution and course from which you graduated;
    3. your preferred contact details, including mailing address, email address and telephone number (if any);
    4. the word count of your pitch (no more than 750 words);
    5. confirmation that you have read and accept the Terms and Conditions of Entry; and
    6. in the case of the top placed entrant, consent for DFAT to publish your name, the name of the Australian education institution form which you graduated and your photograph on DFAT channels, including but not limited to, DFAT’s website, DFAT social media accounts and the business envoy magazine.
  9. The submission must be sent via email to ([email protected]).
  10. Entrants are responsible for the cost (if any) of submitting their entry.
  11. The opening date and time of the Competition is 12:01am (Taipei Time) 28 September 2019. The closing date and time of the Competition is 11:59pm (Taipei Time) 22 November 2019. Entries received outside this time period will not be considered for the Competition. DFAT reserves the absolute discretion to extend the closing date and time of the Competition. 
  12. DFAT will accept no more than one entry per individual in the Competition. The person submitting the entry must be the author. DFAT will not accept entries that have been previously submitted to, or that have won, any local or international competitions. Entries which DFAT determines have involved fraudulent practices, such as false email addresses, plagiarism or any other illegitimate behaviour to gain advantage over other Entrants, will be disqualified from the Competition.
  13. By submitting an entry to the Competition, you (the Entrant) grant DFAT:
    1. Permission for your idea to be published in business envoy, on the DFAT website, including but not limited to www.dfat.gov.au and on DFAT’s social media accounts, including but not limited to https://www.facebook.com/dfat.gov.au/.
    2. A non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free, worldwide, non-transferable, perpetual licence to use, republish, edit, copy and/or modify your Competition entry in any medium (including in electronic format, hard copy and in DFAT, its state and territory office and overseas mission publications).
    3. The right to use your name and the name of your place of study as well as its location for the sole purpose of identifying you as the author of your entry and/or as a winner of the Competition, without payment of additional consideration and except where prohibited by law. This includes, but is not limited to, announcing the result of the Competition and publishing the name of the winners and the name and location of the place of study on the DFAT website, DFAT social media accounts and business envoy magazine.
  14. Entrants also hereby waive all your moral rights in your entry. Notwithstanding the afore-going waiver, in order to use entries as intended and advised in these Terms and Conditions, (i) DFAT, its state and territory offices and overseas missions may need to modify entries, including but not limited to publishing excerpts and DFAT, its state and territory offices and overseas missions shall endeavour in undertaking such modifications to maintain the integrity of your entry; and (ii) DFAT, its state and territory offices and overseas missions shall identify the authors of all entries published.
  15. Entrants’ ideas must be your own work, must not be copied, must not contain any third-party materials and/or content that you do not have permission to use, must not include obscene, defamatory, distasteful or offensive language, not be in breach of any applicable law or regulation, or in breach of any confidentiality obligations owed by you to third parties. Entrants indemnify and hold DFAT harmless from any and all claims by any third party arising out of the use of the Entrant’s entry, including but not limited to claims of infringement or violation of the intellectual property or privacy rights of the third party.
  16. If DFAT has reason to believe your entry is not your own work or otherwise breaches these Terms and Conditions, then DFAT may not consider it and may disqualify it.
  17. Personal information provided by the Entrant will be handled by DFAT in accordance with its obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act) and stored by DFAT on a secure electronic database. Personal information collected by DFAT includes your name, contact details the name of your education institution and your photograph.
  18. DFAT is collecting your personal information for the purposes of Australia-Taiwan Alumni Ideas Challenge competition. If DFAT does not collect your personal information, DFAT will not be able to identify and contact you, as the author of your entry and/or as a winner of the Competition. DFAT will not disclose your personal information to entities outside DFAT. 
  19. Any personal information held by DFAT will be destroyed once it is no longer required for these purposes. For further information on how DFAT will handle your personal information, including how you can access and seek correction of personal information that DFAT holds about you; and how to make a complaint if you have a concern or believe DFAT may have breached an Australian Privacy Principle, please consult our Privacy Policy at http://dfat.gov.au/about-us/about-this-website/pages/privacy.aspx.
  20. A judging panel drawn from within the Australia Office Taipei, the Taiwan government and the Australian and Taiwan business community, will choose one top-placed entry from all the valid Competition entries received in accordance with these Terms and Conditions.
  21. The decision of the top-placed entry of the Competition is at the complete discretion of DFAT.
  22. The top-placed Entrant of the Competition will be awarded following the Competition closing on per paragraph 11. The decision is final and binding on every Entrant and no correspondence will be entered into with unsuccessful Entrants.
  23. The top-placed Entrant will be awarded:
    1. return economy flights from Taiwan to Australia, up to two domestic flights in Australia, accommodation for up to one week in Australia, and a per diem, consistent with the plan outlined in the winning idea.  DFAT will not be responsible for any other costs associated with travel, including ground transport in Taiwan or Australia). 
    2. The Australian Office Taipei will try to facilitate potential meetings in Australia and Taiwan with potential partners and stakeholders as outlined in the winning pitch.
  24. DFAT will notify the top-placed Entrant by email after the closing date and time of the Competition.  If DFAT is unable to contact a top-placed Entrant within two weeks, that top-placed Entrant will forfeit their award and DFAT reserves the right to select another top-placed Entrant, in accordance with these Terms and Conditions.
  25. DFAT reserves the right to, at its absolute discretion and without prior notice, vary, amend, delete or supplement any of these Terms and Conditions and the Entrant’s continued participation in the Competition amounts to acceptance of any revised Terms and Conditions. The Entrant should check the Australian Office Taipei’s website on a regular basis for any changes to these Terms and Conditions. If an Entrant does not agree to a change, he or she may withdraw from the Competition by email.
  26. DFAT reserves the right to, for any reason and without any obligation to state a particular reason, cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Competition. In the event of such cancellation, termination, modification or suspension, DFAT may at its absolute discretion elect not to pick a Winning Entrant. The decision of DFAT to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Competition will not give rise to any liability to pay compensation of any nature to any Entrants.
  27. These Terms and Conditions shall be governed by the laws of the Australian Capital Territory.
